Run NKC Schools 5K
Education Foundation Shares 5K Proceeds
Nearly 2,000 people helped North Kansas City Schools celebrate its Centennial on Saturday, May 4, 2013. The community event was held at North Kansas City High School and the adjacent District Football Stadium. It began with a Parade of Schools at 9 a.m., followed by the annual RUN NKC Schools 5K. Other activities included a free picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a history presentation, school displays, music performances, an art show, culinary demonstrations, face painting, children’s games and more.
A record 400 people signed up for the 5K, and nearly all of them designated a school to receive $5 of their registration fees. The 5K benefited the North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation and PTA, PTSA and booster club organizations throughout the district. Overall, the event raised more than $18,000 through sponsorships and 5K registrations, and school organizations received more than $2,900.
Schools competed for the highest percentage of participants based on enrollment, with opportunities to receive additional funds. Northtown and Antioch took first in the high school and middle school competitions respectively, earning an additional $250. Among elementary schools, there were four winners: 1) Oakwood Manor ($250), 2) Topping ($150), 3) Chouteau ($100) and 4) Clardy ($50).
