Overview

North Kansas City Schools is a widely heralded district for accomplishments in student achievement, computer technology, A+ Schools, cutting-edge instruction, and college and career preparation. The school district serves more than 18,500 students in suburban Kansas City-North and is fully accredited by the state of Missouri. The district also is nationally accredited by the North Central Association's Commission on Accreditation and was the first school system in Missouri to meet that organization's rigorous districtwide quality standards.  All four high schools are A+ certified, which means two years of college tuition reimbursement for students who meet the academic, attendance and citizenship criteria.

The District strives to ensure lifelong success for its children and communities by offering a challenging and relevant curriculum with a qualified and experienced staff. More than 70 percent of teachers hold advanced degrees and have 12 years experience on average.

North Kansas City Schools sets high expectations for students to accept the challenges of rigorous course work and performance assessments. Through the Distinguished Achievement Program, students seek to attain the College Prep Diploma, the Gold Medallion Honors Diploma or the International Baccalaureate Diploma. In the process, they experience challenging curriculum, earn college credit, take advanced placement courses and exams to gain advanced standing in colleges and universities, prepare a portfolio, experience an internship, develop a senior exhibition and perform community service.

Students in North Kansas City Schools consistently score above state and national averages on standardized exams with many students recognized through the Duke Talent Identification Program, National Merit Scholars, Bright Flight and Missouri Scholars program. The District also features gifted education, a 5th grade strings music program, National Honor Society, Junior National Honor Society at the middle school level, and state and nationally recognized academic teams such as Destination ImagiNation, Science Olympiad and Scholar Bowl.

Additionally, the District offers middle school extended-day programs as well as elementary before- and after-school child care. The District has implemented all-day kindergarten at its 21 elementary sites and offers a full complement of early childhood education services with a nationally recognized community education program for learners of all ages.

Parents, businesses and community members are closely involved in the schools through YouthFriends, Partners in Education, shared decision-making councils, PTA and the North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation.
