School Spirit & History

Oak Park High School is now in its fifth decade of service to Northland students, parents and patrons.

The school opened in 1965-66 as the second high school in the North Kansas City School District.

Oak Park colors have been blue on blue: Navy and Columbia blue since opening in September of 1965
.
The mascot has remained the Northmen since opening and the students have continued to refer to themselves as the Oakies. The colors and mascot were chosen by the incoming OP students with the help of Dr. Dan Kahler who served as the principal for the first 21 years.

Since opening, Oak Park has been focused on doing what is best for students.

Craig Shuemaker, a 1967 OPHS graduate, designed our school crest. The tree represents the beautiful oak trees in the grove on the southeast side of our campus. The Northman speaks for great school spirit. The star is each student's guide to the future.

Scholarship is focused on the achievement of our students . The leaf symbolizes the alumni and what they give back to Oak Park
.
Oak Park Senior High School began with the approval of a $3,200,000 bond to build a facility that would hold 2,000 pupils and was the first air-conditioned high school in North Kansas City Schools
.
The school was designed to allow a significant amount of natural light and included several courtyards within the school. Oak Park was awarded an architectural award for its progressive design. Oak Park was one of the first schools to implement computer and business classes. The progressive and innovative nature of Oak Park continues today.

OAK PARK HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER

Oak Park High of you we sing,
To you we will be true;
May we as Northmen bring you honor
And praise the blue on blue
Our strength as Northmen will be shown
With scholarship our guide;
The torch of truth, the radiant star
Are emblems of your pride.
Hail to you, our Alma Mater,
Loyal to you our praises rise;
Building minds of men forever,
Hail to Oak Park High.

NORTHMEN FIGHT SONG

And fight with all your might;
Come on team
And show them how to win
This game tonight (rah)(rah)(rah)!
Come on big blue
We are for you;
We know you will carry us through.
Hail-Hail, the team's all here
For a victory for Oak Park High - FIGHT!
