avid - COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS FOR EVERY STUDENT
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program is a comprehensive college and career readiness system designed to help students from elementary school through postsecondary education succeed academically and prepare for higher education. AVID targets students in the academic middle—those with B, C, or even D grades—who have the potential and desire to attend college or start their career but need additional support to reach their full capabilities.
At North Kansas City Schools, AVID is offered at all middle and high schools, with students dedicating one period each day (or every other day in high school) to building essential skills like organization, study techniques, critical thinking, and asking probing questions. AVID students also receive academic assistance from peers and tutors, while participating in enrichment activities that motivate and make college and career success more attainable.
North Kansas City Schools is proud to be home to two of only three AVID National Demonstration Schools in Missouri and the KC Metro Area—Maple Park Middle School and Winnetonka High School. These schools have held their National Demonstration School status since 2015 and 2018, respectively, and serve as national models for successful AVID Elective programs and school-wide AVID implementation. They showcase the program’s ability to foster an environment of high expectations, support, and achievement.
The AVID curriculum is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading.
Through AVID, students are provided with the following supports:
- Acceleration of underachieving students into more rigorous courses.
- Instruction in academic and social skills not typically covered in other classes.
- Intensive support through in-class tutors and strong student-teacher relationships.
- Creation of a positive, motivating peer group.
- Development of hope and a sense of accomplishment through determination and hard work.
At North Kansas City Schools, AVID ensures that every student has the tools, skills, and support they need to succeed and realize their college and career aspirations.
AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap
by preparing all students for college and career readiness
and success in a global society.
