Did you know? High-achieving students from lower-income backgrounds are significantly less likely to attend college than their more affluent peers.
North Kansas City Schools is committed to changing that. Through the Catalyst Program, students receive targeted support, mentorship, and resources to help make college not just a possibility, but a reality. Catalyst identifies high-performing, historically underrepresented students across the district’s four high schools and equips them with the tools, guidance, and confidence to gain admission to—and graduate from—the nation’s most selective colleges and universities at an affordable cost.
Navigating college choices and financial aid can feel overwhelming—especially for students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. The Catalyst Program is designed to meet that challenge head-on, with a strong focus on college exposure, knowledge building, and skill development so students can present their strongest selves throughout the process. While selective colleges are competitive, our students have the ability to succeed—and with the right support, they can thrive in these spaces.
At the heart of Catalyst is a shared belief that growth happens together. Students learn from one another, challenge each other, and raise the bar as a community—proving that when one succeeds, everyone moves forward.
Catalyst applications for the class of 2028 are now open!

Even though I was a great student, it never even occurred to me that there were options for me beyond the jobs I saw and did growing up coming from a low-income community. But if you’ve worked hard, there are places that will reward you for that hard work and effort. I just had no idea that my daughters would have this opportunity, and I know they now have brighter futures than anyone in my entire family line. Catalyst has made it possible.
