Bonds

Like school districts across the state, NKC Schools uses bond issues to fund major, long-term improvements such as building new schools, renovating existing facilities, improving safety and security, and replacing major building systems. With voter approval, the district sells bonds to raise money for these projects and repays the debt over time, similar to how a homeowner uses a mortgage to purchase a home. This is how projects are funded when they are too large for our normal budget.
Bond funds are restricted to capital improvements and cannot be used for regular operating expenses such as salaries, classroom supplies or utilities.
Bonds are for building. Levies are for learning.
Bond Issue History
The district’s current Long-Range Facility Plan outlined several phases of construction and improvements to occur. Reinvesting in older facilities and accommodating growth are two priorities set by the Board of Education. Over the past ten years, voters have approved bond issues several times: 2016, 2020, 2022, and 2025. All four bond issues resulted in zero tax increase for district residents. We greatly appreciate the community’s support that makes it possible for all students to learn in world-class school facilities. See the breakdown of major projects and plans on the Facility Planning section of our website.
Sale of Bonds: 2022 Election
On April 5, 2022, the voters of the North Kansas City School District approved a resolution to issue $140 million in zero-tax-increase bonds to build new and update aging facilities, many of which are more than 60 years old, to provide facility equity across the district, and to perform facility maintenance and to ensure safety and security for all students. Bonds were issued during fiscal year 2023 and construction began shortly after.
Sale of Bonds: 2025 Election
On April 8, 2025, the voters of the North Kansas City School District approved a resolution to issue $175 million in zero-tax-increase bonds. This bond issue is planned to improve learning environments across the district, ensuring every student has access to world-class learning at every stage of their educational journey. Bonds were issued during fiscal year 2026 and construction began shortly after.
