Budget Reduction Process
Like school districts across Missouri, NKC Schools is navigating a changing financial landscape shaped by state funding shortfalls, rising operating costs and anticipated reductions in state revenue.
The district ended the 2026 fiscal year with a $5.6 million state funding shortfall and currently projects an additional $11 million loss for 2027-28. Taken together, these challenges mean NKC Schools must reduce recurring expenditures by approximately $16 million beginning with the 2027-28 school year.
We are taking a thoughtful, phased approach to this work. The decisions ahead will require careful consideration of district priorities, available resources and the impact on students, staff, families and the broader community. Throughout the process, the district is committed to sharing clear information, providing regular updates and creating meaningful opportunities for community input.
While financial conditions are changing, our mission remains the same: serving as relentless champions for all students and each other. This webpage provides information about the budget reduction process, an archive of communications shared with the public, and details on opportunities to provide feedback and updates as decisions are made.
