Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
AVIDis an elementary through postsecondary college readiness system designed to increase school-wide learning and performance. AVID targets students in the academic middle — B, C, and even D students — who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. The formula is simple: Raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.
AVID is offered in all of our middle and high schools. For one period a day (or every other day in high school), students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and ask probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college attainable.
The AVID curriculum is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading.
North Kansas City Schools is proud to have the only AVID National Demonstration School in the state at Winnetonka High School! Tonka serves as a model for others nationwide due to their success with school-wide implementation of AVID strategies to support all students.
Learn more about AVID on their website or by contacting your school directly. For general questions about AVID programming, please contact the school or Mitsi Nessa, Director of Secondary Programs at 816-321-5805.
