Every Day Counts

What is "good" attendance? At least 95% attendance is our goal for every student. This equals missing no more than one day of school per month (nine days per year).

Cell Phone & Personal Device Policy

North Kansas City Schools has implemented a districtwide policy restricting the use of personal electronic devices – such as cell phones, earbuds, and smartwatches – during school hours. This policy aligns with Missouri state law passed in 2025 (SB68), which requires public school districts to adopt a policy limiting device use during the instructional day. Prior to implementation, NKC Schools surveyed students, families, and staff to better understand current practices. Under the policy, devices must be put away from the first bell to dismissal, with exceptions for medical needs, IEP/504 accommodations, and emergencies.

Required Immunizations: Kindergarten, 8th & 12th Grade

Required Immunizations

In accordance with Missouri law, the district will not allow a student to attend school until we have satisfactory evidence on file demonstrating that the student has been immunized, that the immunization process has begun and satisfactory progress is being accomplished, or that the student is exempted from obtaining immunizations in accordance with the law. Students entering 8th grade for the 2025-2026 school year will need to have the following additional vaccinations on file with their school nurse:

Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (Tdap)
Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV ACWY)

Students entering 12th grade for the 2025-2026 school year will need to have the following additional vaccination on file with their school nurse:

NOTE: The final dose of MCV must be received after age 16 years.

View your child’s bus stop information, pick-up and drop-off times in the Parent Portal. Simply log in and click the Transportation tab on the left. Bus stop information for 2026-27 will be available in August 2025.

Food & Nutrition Services

If you believe that you might qualify for free or reduced meals, fill out an application online as soon as possible. More information is available here. Families are strongly encouraged to apply for the free/reduced price meals program. This ensures discounts on a variety of other programs, including testing, activity fees and more! Earlier this year, the Board of Education approved meal prices for the upcoming school year. We want to share this information with families in advance so you can plan ahead for the fall. While we never want to increase meal prices, the cost of food continues to rise – just as the prices we all pay at the grocery store are going up. Districts across the state and nation are facing the same challenges and must adjust prices as a result. In North Kansas City Schools, we will implement a $0.25 increase for lunch and $0.10 for breakfast. Thanks to effective fiscal management over the years, these increases are lower than some of our neighboring districts have needed to implement. All pricing follows federal and state guidelines and recommendations.

Meal prices for students during the 2026-27 school year will be:

• Elementary Breakfast: $1.95
• Secondary Breakfast: $2.00
• Elementary Lunch: $3.45
• Secondary Lunch: $3.70
• Milk: $0.75

Communication

Ongoing communication with parents and guardians is a priority for our schools and the district. Beginning July 1, North Kansas City Schools will transition to ParentSquare as our districtwide platform for communicating with families.

Feedback from parents has indicated that keeping track of multiple communication tools can be challenging. Over the past two years, we have explored ways to create a more streamlined experience and improve access to school information. Following a successful pilot at Gateway and Eastgate 6th Grade Centers, ParentSquare will be expanded to all schools this fall. It will replace several systems currently in use, including Smore, ClassDojo, SportsYou and SchoolMessenger. The platform brings together school and classroom updates, direct messages, emergency notifications, sign-ups, and more in one place, with instant translation available in more than 100 languages. We’re looking forward to this opportunity to expand access and make it easier than ever for you to stay up-to-date.

All parents and guardians registered in PowerSchool will be automatically signed up for ParentSquare – no need to make another account. Look for more information to come as we begin the new school year.

All parents and guardians also receive regular district email newsletters with updates, celebrations and news every other Tuesday during the school year.

Technology

NKC Schools students use a variety of technology tools to support learning across all grades. All parents and guardians are encouraged to create a Parent Observer account on Canvas, our online learning management system. A parent observer account allows you to view your child's progress, assignments and other information.

Enrollment, along with grade, schedule, bus and other general information may be accessed through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Students in grades K-12 are issued a district device. We encourage all families to consider device insurance to minimize risk. Insurance may be purchased on MyPaymentsPlus until shortly after the start of the school year; a device inspection is required prior to purchasing insurance after this date.

Volunteering in NKC Schools

YouthFriends

YouthFriends are volunteer mentors who support students. Opportunities to volunteer include before or after school activities, breakfast or lunch buddies, classroom helpers, library assistance, tutoring and more.
