Standards-Based Learning
In NKC Schools, we want grades to clearly show what students know and can do.
A standards-based learning is being introduced step by step districtwide, with one simple goal: giving learners and their families clear, fair and accurate information about progress.
This approach is built on a few key ideas. Grades should be clear and consistent, focused on the most important learning standards for each subject. Only work tied directly to those goals is included in grades, and not every assignment needs to be graded. Grades reflect a body of evidence gathered over time to show a student’s most recent and consistent level of understanding. Grades reflect learning so families can see both what their child has learned and how they are developing as responsible, engaged learners.
By focusing on clear learning targets and meaningful feedback, standards-based learning helps families see where their child is thriving, where they’re still growing, and how we can work together to support their success.
A standards-based approach:
- Communicates what students know and are able to do.
- Scores a student’s progress toward the attainment of a standard.
- Clearly outlines expectations ahead of time.
- Is based on skills and learning, as opposed to rote memory or test-taking skills.
- Emphasizes the most recent and consistent evidence of learning.
Standards-based learning and grading is being introduced in phases across NKC Schools. We’ll keep this hub updated with the latest information as the rollout continues. If you have questions, start by reaching out to your child’s school.
