Tips for Families

Standards-based learning may look and feel a little different, but the goal is the same: helping every student grow and succeed. Here are some simple ways families can stay informed and support learning at home. If you have questions, please reach out to your child's school. We value our partnership with families greatly.

Celebrate Progress

Growth happens in steps. Celebrate when your student moves closer to meeting a learning goal — and recognize the hard work it took to get there.

Discuss Feedback

Teachers will share specific notes on what your student does well and what needs more practice. Review this feedback together and use it to set short-term goals.

Partner with Teachers

If you have questions about how progress is measured or how effort is noted, reach out to your student’s teacher. They can explain how these pieces connect with your child’s overall growth.

Review Grade Reports

Your student's progress is reported quarterly or at semester through formal report cards. Log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal to view your child's grade cards.

Understand the Proficiency Scale

Parents and guardians are the first champions of students' learning. Understanding what their grades and feedback means is critically important. We encourage all families to become familiar with the NKC Schools proficiency scale.
