NKCSD High-School Journalists Earn National Awards

Journalism students from North Kansas City, Oak Park, Staley and Winnetonka high schools attended the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention last week in Dallas, Texas. They competed on the national stage in contests held by the Journalism Education Association, and awards ran from Superior to Excellent to Honorable Mention.

Individual students earned: 

Oak Park High School  

  • Junior Ashton Berry, Excellent in Portrait Photo
  • Sophomore Angelina Garcia, Honorable Mention in Themed Photo
  • Freshman Bridget Johnsen, Honorable Mention in Broadcast Newswriting
  • Sophomore Cheyenne McGowan, Honorable Mention in Literary Magazine: Photography

North Kansas City High School:

  • Junior Corrine Bucksner-Hall, Honorable Mention in Commentary Writing
  • Junior Bryce Johnsen, Honorable Mention in Broadcast Package
  • Junior Emanuel Rodriguez, Honorable Mention in Broadcast Package

Staley High School:

  • Senior Caroline Bonacorso, Excellent in Yearbook Copy/Caption: Academics
  • Junior Grace Duddy, Honorable Mention in Themed Photo
  • Senior Emilie Kerr, Honorable Mention in Photography Portfolio
  • Junior Haley Anne Mahusay, Honorable Mention in Graphic Design: Infographics
  • Senior Leidy Venegas, Honorable Mention in Newsmagazine Layout

During the national convention, Best of Show awards were ranked by the National Scholastic Press Association to the top 10 publications in newsmagazine, yearbook, online and broadcast.  

Overall publications earned:

Winnetonka High School:

  • TonkaNews.com, Eighth Place Best of Show for Publication Website Small School

 

In addition to the competitions, students had their choice of more than 300 class sessions taught by award-winning journalists, advisers and others. A trade show included college representatives and other vendors. Students also heard about the career of photographer Erin Grace Trieb who began her career photographing in Israel and the Palestinian territories and freelancing for newspapers in Texas.
