The word curriculum is literally translated as the Latin, “course to be run.” North Kansas City Schools has worked continuously to define this course for all students as we create the extraordinary educational experiences described by the Strategic Plan.
We first begin with standards. Missouri has defined learning targets for all grade levels and courses. Teams of teachers then break these standards down by defining what knowledge and skill is required for students to reach the defined target. In sharing these goals with students, our curricular documents contain “I Can” statements, outlining what students should know and be able to do, but written in kid-friendly language.
Teacher teams, often with the help of our district Instructional Coordinators and/or consultants from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, determine appropriate learning progressions and suggested pacing for units of study. They also designate aligned resources and review assessment items that help inform our progress toward these standards.
Curricular development is an ongoing process. NKC Schools is committed to the continual examination of our “course to be run” as we provide opportunities for every student to maximize his or her unique potential.
