Northgate Teacher Earns "Outstanding" Award

A special education teacher and behavior specialist at Northgate Middle School in the award-winning North Kansas City School District, has been awarded the 2018 Outstanding Educator Award by the Midwest Symposium for Leadership in Behavior Disorders. Janet Burgess will be recognized during the awards program hosted by the planning committee on Thursday, February 22, 2018 in Kansas City, Missouri. Burgess was also chosen to be a part of the Midwest Symposium for Leadership in Behavior Disorders Master Teacher Group.

Janet has been serving the students of North Kansas City Schools for 18 years. She was recognized for her passion in building trust with students, the foundation of any successful behavioral intervention. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music therapy and a master’s degree of special education and choral music from East Carolina University. Janet is currently developing an alternative to suspension program and serves on the Clay County Community Juvenile Justice Board Diversion program where she leads restorative circles for first time offenders.

As a part of its effort to actively accomplish this mission, the Midwest Symposium seeks to recognize individuals who exhibit outstanding achievement and excellence in classroom service to students with emotional/behavioral disorders.
