NKC Band Director Named Quarterfinalist for Grammy Educator Award
Posted 06/14/2018 01:35PM

North Kansas City High School band director Carrie Epperson has been named a quarterfinalist for the annual Grammy Music Educator Award. The Music Educator Award recognizes one teacher every year who has made a difference in the lives of their students. Recognized teachers also have significant impact on their larger school community as well as contributions to music education as a whole.

Epperson’s commitment to the band program at North Kansas City has brought success and built a strong sense of community. In just the last ten years, the band program has nearly doubled in size. Students have consistently earned top ratings at state and local competitions, and have traveled to festivals in New York City, London, Vienna, and beyond. From incoming freshmen to graduating seniors, band members appreciate that Epperson reaches out to build connections and create “an environment where everyone is welcome.”

Epperson is one of only 188 educators in the country selected from almost 3,000 nominations. She is also one of only five teachers from Missouri chosen as a quarterfinalist. Epperson will now move on to the next stage of selection before the winner is chosen during Grammy Week in January 2019. Each finalist’s school will receive generous grants to support their programs from the Grammy Museum and Recording Academy.
