Board Authorizes Partial Purchase of Prospect Plaza
As a result of a Board action on Tuesday, October 8, NKC Schools is authorized to purchase a portion of Prospect Plaza (what was Hobby Lobby and additional property near 64th Street and Antioch). This space is approximately 115,000 square feet that can be dedicated to our youngest learners – three to five year-olds throughout our district.
For several years now, the district has experienced capacity issues at Pleasant Valley, where we currently host our Early Childhood Special Education program. That site has nine classrooms, while ten additional classrooms exist throughout the district. The staff at Pleasant Valley should be commended for their incredible ability to serve students, in spite of an inefficient model. The purchase of this new space will allow consolidation of all Early Childhood Special Education programming in one location, reducing the need for itinerant staff such as Speech/Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, etc., to travel in providing much-needed service. Special equipment and materials can now be housed in one central location to better meet the needs of our youngest learners.
The space at Prospect Plaza will also allow for additional classrooms that expand our pre-K offerings to families. NKC Schools has hired an architect firm, DLR, to design the open facility to include a projected 41 classrooms, total. The district now has greater ability to meet the needs of students early on, translating to their future academic success.
The goal is to have the facility open by December 2020. It continues to be an exciting time for our district in accommodating growth and serving as Champions for All Students!
