Classrooms Reopen for July Summer School Session

NKC Schools has been hard at work planning a face-to-face summer school session for July 6-30. To ensure that the health and wellness of students, teachers and staff remains a top priority, the reopening of school buildings will adhere to all national, state and local public health guidelines. Our learning environments have been deep cleaned, disinfected and are ready for the safe return of our students.

Families can expect several changes to standard summer school operations including:

  • Limited enrollment at selected sites (see chart below). Due to the number of staff and students participating in July, combining of grade levels will be necessary.
  • Bus transportation will continue to be provided for students with social distancing (to the extent possible) encouraged.
  • Lunch will be served in classrooms to avoid large student gatherings.
  • Staff will reinforce increased cleaning and disinfecting efforts.
  • Handwashing will be conducted frequently, along with lessons on proper procedure.
  • The number of people entering the school will be minimized. Family members and other outside visitors will not be allowed to walk students to class or enter the school.
  • School staff will perform a quick wellness check with students each morning to ensure all are healthy and ready to be at school.
  • Supporting key reading and math skills will be the academic focus of the July session, as well as social-emotional learning. Encore classes will not be offered during this time.
  • Students will have recess play time in small groups.

Families who are interested in having their child participate in the July face-to-face option should enroll students by calling their school. Please note that this does not guarantee your child’s participation. Final enrollment will depend on the availability of staff as the district ensures an appropriate student to teacher ratio.

Students who are already signed up to participate in Adventure Club in July also have the option to participate in the face-to-face summer school session. All families will need to complete the enrollment process as well.

Continued e-Learning Option

For those students who don’t return for in-person instruction in July, e-Learning opportunities will continue. Online learning will mirror activities from the June session and include:

  • Learning activities will be provided Monday-Thursday with Friday serving as a catch-up day (similar to how Mondays have been structured this spring)
  • Live daily interaction with a teacher and fellow classmates (Monday-Thursday)
  • Key skill improvement in reading and math
  • Enrichment through blended and project-based learning activities

Families who are interested in having their child participate in the July e-Learning option should enroll students by calling their school. Please note that this does not guarantee your child’s participation. Final enrollment will depend on the availability of staff.

As plans are finalized and staffing assignments confirmed, additional information will be provided to families by their school. Please be watching for more detail in the coming days. NKC Schools is excited to reopen our doors and welcome students back to class in July!
