New Elementary Wednesday Afternoon Schedule

Over the course of the past few months, our elementary students have continued to make us proud with their growth, learning and resilience in adapting to the unique challenges of this school year. Whether your student is learning in person or virtually, thank you for partnering with NKC Schools. We appreciate the efforts of our families, staff and community in supporting each learner!

While the year is off to a great start, we know that continuing to adjust and improve our processes is critical to serving all students. Supporting both in-person and virtual learners has presented challenges for our teachers as they seek to build strong connections between all students in their classroom community.

In response to teachers’ expressed need, beginning December 2, NKC Schools will implement a weekly flexible learning time on Wednesdays for all elementary students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Students will be dismissed from school two hours early each Wednesday.

During this time, all elementary students should continue their independent work and activities as assigned by their teachers at home. This change will provide additional time for our teachers and staff to meet the needs of virtual students and families.

A few important details to note:

  • Transportation will continue to be provided. Further details about Wednesday afternoon bus dropoff times will be communicated directly with families.
  • For current Adventure Club families, School Age Child Care will still offer care on Wednesday afternoons. There will be no change in practice if you are already a part of this program.
  • If you are not a current Adventure Club family, yet have extenuating circumstances that cause you to need childcare for these two hours on Wednesdays, we may be able to help. Depending on the resources at each site, specifically staff and space, supervision of students as they complete assignments might be possible. We must first determine families’ level of need to see what additional services we are able to provide. If you have interest in Wednesday afternoon childcare, and can provide your own transportation home at the typical dismissal time, click here to provide more information. Once resources and need are aligned for each site, communication will follow regarding availability of additional childcare.
  • Title I and Early Childhood Special Education preschool programs will not be dismissed early on Wednesdays. Our pre-K students will continue to attend the full day on Wednesdays.

Look for further details to come from your student’s school as we transition to the new Wednesday schedule beginning December 2. Thank you for your flexibility and support as we continue seeking new ways to best serve our students!
